Preserving The Harvest

Pastured Homestead Pork

PASTURED PORK

We raise KuneKune and American Guinea homestead hogs on our pastures and in our forests as nature would have it, freely and accompanied by other critters.  We utilize electro-netting to keep them safe from predators, moving their paddocks perpetually, allowing them fresh forage as they build up our soil quality.

Though our pigs are primarily raised on pasture, they are treated daily with kitchen scraps, garden & dairy excess, summertime blackberry harvest… In the fall they enjoy cleaning the orchard floor of downed apples/pears/plums & nuts, keeping yellow jackets at bay.  They work with us to keep our farm happy, healthy, and biodiverse!

Keeping all of this in mind, you’ll see our primary goal is not to profit financially (or in the freezer!) from our hogs, but to work side by side with them as we apply regenerative farming practices to our heritage Woodland farm.  We are preserving the old, yet building new.  It’s a pleasure to have these guys and gals on our team!

Pastured Pork.  We harvest once or twice a year using a mobile slaughter truck for least stress on the animal, then send the hanging meat to age and be further processed (cured, cut & wrapped, etc) at a local butcher shop. We’ve a long history in the community, and prefer either Gartner’s Custom Meats in Portland, Oregon, or Matt’s Custom Meats in Kelso, or McPhee Butcher Block in Woodland, WA.  We have used Butcher Boys in Vancouver on occasion and have been satisfied,.
